Nestled at the foot of the limestone cliffs of Les Baux-de-Provence, La Bergerie de Calabrun is one of the most singular properties in the Alpilles: a restored shepherd's shelter where the rock itself has been woven into the architecture, shaping a 75-square-metre living room whose ceiling is not plaster or beam but raw, millennia-old stone. The renovation has preserved the original structure entirely, revealing a contemporary soul through limewashed mineral walls, reclaimed wood, aged brass fittings, and ceramics handcrafted by local artisans. Five ensuite bedrooms spread across 475 square metres, two heated pools — one outdoors, one enclosed within the spa beneath the rocks — and terraces facing the garrigue-covered hills complete a house designed, above all else, to feel as though it has always been there.

The Signature
Highlights

  • The Indoor Spa — a dedicated spa level housing a 6-by-3.5-metre heated salt-water pool, a sauna, and a walk-in shower, all positioned within the lower level of the house and accessed independently from the main living areas.

  • The Rock Vault Lounge — a 75-square-metre living room where the ceiling is the raw underside of a limestone cliff, the walls rough-hewn stone, the lighting low and indirect, deep sofas and layered rugs absorbing the natural acoustics of the cave so that the room is at once monumental in scale and entirely unhurried in atmosphere.

  • Sleeping Beneath the Rock — the master bedroom of 50 square metres is built directly into the cliff face, with an open copper bathtub beside the bed, a walk-in shower, double sinks, a large dressing room, and a private balcony of 18 square metres overlooking the garden and garrigue below.

  • The Cliff Garden & Pool — a private garden where the 10-by-3.5-metre heated salt-water pool sits directly at the foot of the limestone cliff face, the ancient rock rising immediately behind it, sunbeds and lounge seating arranged between the water and the stone.

  • The Lacanche Kitchen — a 52-square-metre kitchen and dining room where a professional gas range sits beside a long table crafted by Fontvieille artisans seating twelve, the glassware and tableware sourced from local makers, the whole room opening directly onto the garden so that the boundary between cooking and being outside disappears.

  • La Bergerie de Calabrun is a restored shepherd's shelter located in Les Baux-de-Provence, within the Alpilles Regional Natural Park, sleeping up to 10 guests across five en-suite double bedrooms.

  • The property extends across 475 square metres of interior space set within a 2,700-square-metre garden, with three floors connected by a wrought-iron spiral staircase.

  • The master bedroom of 50 square metres is built directly beneath the rocky vault and features an open copper bathtub, walk-in shower, double sink, large walk-in closet, and a private balcony of 18 square metres.

  • The heated outdoor pool measures 10 x 3.5 metres, depth 1.4 metres, salt-treated, and is heated from May to September up to 29°C; a second heated indoor pool of 6 x 3.5 metres is housed within the spa area beneath the rocks.

  • The spa includes a sauna, walk-in shower, and four armchairs, all positioned within the cave-like lower level of the house.

  • The fully equipped kitchen of 52 square metres features a Lacanche gas stove, Miele dishwasher, Liebherr double-door fridge, ice maker, wine fridge, and a dining table seating up to 12; tableware and glassware are sourced from local Provençal artisans.

  • The 75-square-metre living room is formed beneath a monumental natural rock vault and is furnished with bespoke pieces including Midi Editions bench and chairs, a Galerie La Lune burnt-wood lounge table, Berber rugs, and Catalan tapestries.

  • Interior furnishings throughout include Atelier Vime lighting, Pierre Frey and Elitis textiles, pieces sourced from L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, and ceramics designed by the architects and handcrafted by Diane Frekete.

  • Outdoor amenities include an al fresco dining area for 10, a Kamado barbecue, a brasero with lounge seating in Hervé Baume furniture, and a private garden with hiking and cycling paths leading directly into the Alpilles.

  • Included services are daily housekeeping, daily continental breakfast, a resident house manager and concierge, weekly pool and garden maintenance, and weekly linen change.

  • The village of Les Baux-de-Provence is a 3-minute drive; the three-Michelin-starred L'Ousteau de Baumanière is in immediate proximity; Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is 10 minutes away; Arles is 20 minutes; Avignon TGV station is 35 minutes; and Marseille Provence Airport is 45 minutes.

  • Two golf courses — Domaine de Manville and Golf de Servanes at Mouriès — are accessible from the property, and hiking and cycling trails depart directly from the garden.
