Nestled at the heart of Mouriès — France's foremost olive-growing village and one of the Parc Naturel Régional des Alpilles' most quietly vivid addresses — Mas Respelido is a meticulously restored Provençal mas whose stones carry the resonance of the 16th century and whose interiors speak the language of the present with equal conviction. The property brings together several beautifully restored structures — a main house of 350 square metres, a detached summer house of 120 square metres — all gathered around a walled garden where old rose bushes and fragrant jasmine entwine harmoniously beneath a magnificent century-old plane tree, and a salt-water pool catches the light of the Alpilles sky beyond a curtain of lush greenery. More than seventy percent of the materials woven into its restoration are French-made, sourced from local artisans and recovered from brocantes across the region: restored beams, traditional clay tiles, reclaimed floors and a collection of antiques and artworks that give every room a quality of quiet discovery, each object carrying its own history. The village's Wednesday market, its cafés shaded by plane trees, its three working olive mills and the medieval citadel of Les Baux-de-Provence just eleven kilometres distant complete a portrait of Provence in which nothing has been merely suggested.

The Signature
Highlights

  • Barefoot Between Two Houses — clay tiles warm from the morning sun, the crimson kitchen fragrant with coffee and pastry, bare feet crossing gravel to the summer house where the pool shimmers through the bay window and the morning has no particular agenda.

  • Lunch in the Pool House — the summer house table laid for twelve, the bay doors thrown open to the water and the jasmine, a long wooden surface accumulating dishes and conversation in equal measure, the palm tree throwing its shadow across the terrace in slow arcs through the midday hours.

  • A House That Fills the Day — the pool, the summer house, the reading room with its antique piano, the garden at any hour: Mas Respelido is a house that has quietly arranged for the day to fill itself.

  • Kitchen Rituals — the great stone fireplace, the reclaimed wood table, the Lacanche range, glassware and cutlery from local artisans sufficient for twenty: the kitchen at Mas Respelido is built for the kind of cooking that takes most of the morning and all of the afternoon.

  • Pétanque and Billiards — a private pétanque court on the courtyard gravel for the sun-bright hours, and a French billiards table in the summer house for when the afternoon tilts toward shade and competition finds a different room.

  • The Master's in the Summer House — open the window and the pool is directly below, the garden beyond it, the palm tree level with the sill: sixty square metres of bedroom that makes the distance between sleep and water a single flight of stairs.

  • Mas Respelido is a restored Provençal mas situated in the centre of Mouriès, in the Parc Naturel Régional des Alpilles, 11km from Les Baux-de-Provence, 15km from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and 30km from Arles.
